The triumph of the human spirit San Cristóbal

The 12th October of 1972, the Uruguayan Air Force plane carrying teenagers members of a Uruguayan rugby team, their friends and family members, crashed into the Andes Mountains.

Dr. Roberto Canessa with Nando Parrado stunned the world after crossing the Andes during eleven days under extreme conditions and without equipment and climbing 15,000 feet in the snowcapped Andes, to guide rescuers back to fourteen friends still trapped in the mountains seventy-two days after their plane crashed.

Dr. Canessa being a medicine student was one of sixteen passengers who survived after extreme conditions, temperatures below zero, injuries, starvation and isolation. He is also very well known for his work with newborn patients and prenatal echocardiography in Uruguay.
